Mark Zuckerberg is following up his aquisition of Whatsapp with another big acquisition : virtual reality company Oculus VR for $2 billion in stock and cash. In a post on facebook, Zuckerberg talks at length about how Facebook plans to make Oculus a platform for "completely new kinds of experiences," and gaming is only the first one.
Mark Zuckerberg revealed the statistics during an investor call to discuss the acquisition of Oculus Rift, a Californian company which specializes in virtual reality products, for around $2 billion. The deal includes $400 million in cash and over 23 million Facebook shares.
The start-up's flagship product, is the Oculus Rift, a goggle-like "immersive" headset for video gaming. The company acquired funding through the crowd funding site Kickstarter. It has also received 75000 for development kits. Oculus' crowd funding campaign raised approximately $2.4 million, 10 times more than the amount originally sought. The company subsequently received a funding of $75 million from investors.
The Virtual Reality Headsets may turn out to be the next big thing in the world of gadgets, as Sony showed off its VR Project Morpheus last week.
