With 1.32 billions monthly active users and 829 million daily active users, Facebook continues to be the number one social networking site. Out of these users, 1 billion monthly active users use Facebook mobile application to access their news feed, messages etc. Facebook is aware of its popularity on mobile platform and taking advantage of this fact,Facebook now started forcing its users to download its standalone messaging app as the social network begins its final phaseout of mobile messaging through its main Facebook app.
In April, Facebook has announced that this would happen. They rolled this transition of mobile messaging from the main app to messenger app to its users in Europe using Android and iOS. Facebook witnessed some positive results of this step and plans to roll out to everyone. We in India also started getting notifications about this transition.

Facebook confirmed the move in a statement seen by Techcrunch, saying, "In the next few days, we're continuing to notify more people that if they want to send and receive Facebook messages, they'll need to download the Messenger app.
"As we've said, our goal is to focus development efforts on making Messenger the best mobile messaging experience possible and avoid the confusion of having separate Facebook mobile messaging experiences. Messenger is used by more than 200 million people every month, and we'll keep working to make it an even more engaging way to connect with people."

Facebook will replace its message tab with messenger shortcut in its main app with a fast switching option between the two apps.
Facebook may back this transition for better user experience as already 200 million users are using Messenger App to send 12 billion messages a day including photos, group messages, videos, stickers, and audio clips etc and users can reply 20% faster. But this transition is also facing criticism, as users need to manage two different apps for using Facebook on mobile. That means more space required to run these two apps which will be the main concerns for budget phone users with limited storage
There is good news for Windows Phone users, however, as they won't be required to download Facebook Messenger at least for now.
