Will Jolla be able to attract customers in India?
-By Anubhav Goel, July 19th, 2014
Jolla ( pronounced as "yolla") offers a smartphone which is an alternative to iOS and Android based phones, from a team of ex-Nokia employees. Jolla went public on 6 July 2012, announcing its intention to develop new smartphones which utilized a gesture-oriented user interface. They named their operating system "Sailfish", which is a result of Mer and includes a gesture-based user interface developed . In Feb 2014,they expressed their interest in expanding to Hong Kong, Russia and India. Currently Jolla is available in all European countries for a price tag of 399 EUROs (approx. 34,000 INR).
Yesterday , we talked about Jolla’s plan to enter the Indian smartphone market in partnership with the online retailer Snapdeal.com and compete with the a whole range of native and international devices. Apart from the top players, Samsung, Apple and Sony, Indian manufacturers like Micromax and XOLO have already proved their metal in the Indian market. Major Chinese smartphone makers like Gionee and Xiaomi are also trying hard to do same and creating problem for other players by providing more features in reasonable prices like we heard about Xiaomi Mi 3 giving heat to Nexus 5 with just 13,999 INR price tag.
Reason why jolla could be a success
- Jolla is presenting a new alternative to iOS and Android by presenting Sailfish OS, a truly open and distinct mobile operating system. Navigate effortlessly with the gesture-based user interface can woo those who are just bored with current OS options
- You can personalize your phone with the feature called “ The Other Half”. The removable covers, which come in a number of different colors, each have an NFC chip which stores information. When attached to the phone, the case dictates the wallpaper, custom tones and other settings.
- Jolla brings you the best of both worlds – super intuitive Sailfish OS apps and the latest Android™ apps. You get an access to more than 85000 android apps though without direct access to Google play.
Reasons which might trouble Jolla
- Jolla would be launching its first device which is powered by a 1.4GHz dual-core processor made by Qualcomm and 1GB of RAM. If we believe that jolla will stick to its current pricing trend then very less Indians will be interested in buying this dual core processor smartphone in 34,000 INR. Where they can easily get an octa-core device in less than 15,000 INR.
- Where companies are trying too hard to include DSLR like features in Smartphone Cameras, Jolla’s providing an 8Mp rear camera with an LED flash and a 2Mp front-facing webcam. The camera may not have an HDR or Panorama mode but can record videos in 1080p Full HD. These features will really made jolla to fail in attracting Indian selfie lovers with just a 2MP front camera
We are eagerly waiting for Jolla to release its smartphone as it will definitely add a third dimension(having its roots from NOKIA) to Indian market irrespective of its success or failure
